BlissBleep

Here’s a nice little piece on Bleep by, as I’ve mentioned before, one of my favorite music writers, Simon Reynolds. The musical genealogist in me has always loved trying to dig up old music (and even genres) that I’ve never heard of before in attempts to better understand a current style that I might be digging at the moment (dubstep or grime for example). Bleep was the British transmutation of Chicago and Detroit house and a precursor to 2step, jungle, drum&bass, dubstep to grime. Most of these tracks came out around 1990, which would have made me 11 at the time…in Clinton, Mississippi. This music might as well have been coming out of stereo speakers on some desolate planet eons away from my tape deck. You (unless you know more than me about Bleep) may recognize a few like LFO and Nightmares on Wax You will have to scroll down a bit after the jump but there’s also a really nice primer on Grime before the piece on Bleep.

UK PRESSURE MIX 90-91
A fine Bleep mix by Gutterbreakz http://gutterbreakz.blogspot.com/2007/03/uk-pressure-mix-90-91.html

Better know your history. Otherwise, you are not pathetically embarrassed to tell your friendsters that you actually like Justice.

Throwback Tracks: Northern Exposure

northern exposure Sasha & John Digweed Northern Exposure Vol. 1 1997 I’ve been listening to Sasha & John Digweed’s celebrated trance mix classic Northern Exposure Vol. 1 while at work laboring away. Now I know trance music went way out of vogue for a while there but I feel much of it (including this) has stood the proverbial test of time. Organic (free-range) trance with an ambient yet up tempo feel, Northern Exposure will definitely “tranceport” you out of your swivel chair for an hour or two. CD1: North

my favorite links / i need links

Who works in front of a computer? I do. Its boring sometimes…many times. Anyway, here are a few of my favorite distractions whilst plopped in front of the computer. Oh and yes, I need new links! Give me your favorite!

- blissblog: The blog of English music critic Simon Reynolds. He actually has several blogs which are all linked up on the right hand side. The best music writer/critic you can find.

- the quietus: The Quietus is a promising new pop and rock website. They asked themselves, “outside of the niche press is there literally nothing that caters for the intelligent music fan between the age of 21 and, well, 73?”, and Quietus was born.

- QBN: for a better tomorrow: If looking at vintage VHS movie covers from Sweden intersts you, then head over to QBN. QBN is a nice little link page for art, design and, well, anything aesthetically pleasing.

- drawn: I don’t read comics anymore and I’m not an illustrator, but I usually check out a nice little cartooning and illustration blog called DRAWN!

- arts & letters daily: A&L Daily is a great distraction. Don’t feel like surfing endlessly to find a great article to pass the time? Well then, give A&L a spin and choose between: article of note, new books, and essays and opinions.

smoke break

I read this reflection by David Sedaris and, for the first time since I started smoking, thought about what it might be like to quit smoking. BUT, I’m about to take a smoke break…..nnnnow.

a poor salsa

Ok, so this is the tumblr that everyone has been talk’n about. Ok let’s see. What has happened to me recently that I could talk about? Oh yes, I got maced (not directly in the face) at Martin’s in Jackson, MS by the security guard this past weekend. I can now check “getting maced” off of my list of things to do before I die.
